Circles of Confusion, April Henry's first novel, has a contemporary setting (it was written in the late 1990s), but you'll probably remember it in the bright Technicolor of a 1950s Hitchcock film. The real shock is when she gets to Mexico and finds herself at Peaceful Cove, a school for petulant teenagers. This book contained a lot of interesting details where you were never quite sure what would happen next, but it always kept you thinking. The setting was located in Portland Oregon, a place that I have never been to, or know hardly anything about. Cheyenne was taking a nap in the back of the car. This book had some great suspense. Once Cassie begins to be suspicious about her step fathers client's deaths, things start going bad. It was also very interesting because the author adds flashbacks allowing for the setting to shift from present day to the past such as the early 1950s making the novel slightly historical. Cassie is shocked when she is kidnapped right in front of her house and her mother and stepfather seem to be the ones who set it up. The plot surrounds a woman named Clair Montrose who encounters a 50 year old diamond ring within a old stone wall of a house one day while out jogging. While the mystery was interesting and the solution not obvious, the clues weren't as subtle as they could have been. Cassies stepfather then sends her out to a boot camp for troubled teens in Mexico to keep her quiet. On a whim, Claire decides to take a much needed vacation to New York City to find out if the painting is valuable. Cassie discovers that her stepfather, Rick, a teen psychiatrist, has been illegally prescribing a new behavioral drug to his patients— and three teens have died. When he finds out, he has her sent away to a school/prison in Mexico. I am not a reader at all but this book never bored me it always kept me reading. I would recommend this book to young adults because some things younger people may not understand. After I finished reading, I read the back of the inside cover and it uncovered that the author (April Henry) got the idea of this story from true events, which makes it even more enticing. by Putnam Publishing Group.
